Does anyone do birthday celebrations AT HOME with just family anymore? Why does there have to be fanfare? Why does there have to be a ton of people?

We exclusively do our birthday parties at home. We invite our close friends with kids, but then we transition the birthday party into a game night.
C is old enough to grumble about how unfair it is that her friends don't get to come, but we just tell her they live too far away. (Mostly we don't want strange kids in our home, but it is also true that we live about 40 miles away from her school.)

I didn't have parties growing up. Going out to eat dinner was a big deal. J seems to think the kid needs a party. It's fine, I squared it away (last minute) because quite frankly I still feel like shit most of the time and god forbid J actually plan something all on his own OR understand that cleaning this house and entertaining friends and their children might not be something I'm up for.
I'm in a terrible mood.

Easily the biggest difference between my girl and my boy: the mischief they make. This was the last hour of last night...
The girl-
GIRL (to her brother): UGH! You are such a loser!!
DAD: What the hell did you just say to your brother?!
GIRL: Nothing.
DAD: I heard you, asshole. Don't try to lie to me.
And from there, there's corner time and lectures about name calling and lying.
The boy, on the other hand-
(fake puking and gargling noise coming from the bathroom)
GIRL: Ewwwwww!
BOY: (explosion of giggles)
DAD: OH, WHAT THE FUCK?! DID YOU JUST STICK YOUR HEAD IN THE TOILET?!!! WHY? JUST WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU STICK YOUR HEAD IN THE TOILET?!!! GO WASH YOUR MOUTH OUT AND BRUSH YOUR TEETH. DON'T EVER STICK YOUR HEAD IN THE TOILET!!!
So, yeah, girls. Still mischief, just different.

We are supposed to leave for my best friends wedding in less than ten hours. L is in fine asshole form, the baby has a cold, I'm gonna have to pray my way into that dress Saturday and while rushing through a mani pedi with just two out of the five kids i basically was made to feel like an awful mother for having the sick baby out in public..in vietnemese.
L is out getting himself a dress shirt and a hair cut with B.
All three big girls are in the tub.
And Im gonna go take a shot of crown and sneak a cigarette. Because...
