Netgear Launches WAX630E AX7800 Wi-Fi 6E Access Point for SMBs February 23, 2022by Martin 6 Netgear has been building a portfolio of software-defined networking (SDN) products over the past few years. Introducing the cloud-based Insight management feature to a range of SMB products that extend beyond their routers, switches and access points to a wider customer base. Versions of leading technologies aimed at SMBs often lag behind their consumer counterparts by up to a year, and updates to flagship offerings are often spaced out. However, the Wi-Fi 6 WAX630 Netgear (in June 2021 ) today receives an update / companion Wi-Fi 6E in the form of the WAX630E.
The Qualcomm-based WAX630E is one of the first C Level Executive List smart SMB Wi-Fi 6E APs for SMBs and small businesses. Many of the announced and leaked offerings in the Wi-Fi 6E space have been delayed (with FCC certification a hurdle), allowing Netgear's offering to be available for purchase ahead of the competition. The benefits of Wi-Fi 6E have been previously discussed in numerous articles, including the original Wi-Fi Alliance coverage announcement , and Netgear's first Wi-Fi 6E product in the consumer space last year. The availability of much wider interference-free spectrum on 6 GHz - up to seven 160 MHz usable - means that the consumer experience should be much better. The disadvantage is that the range is reduced due to power limitationsfront. On the technical front, the WAX630E replaces the WAX630's 4x4 5GHz third band with a 2x2 6GHz radio.
The 2.4 GHz radio configuration has also been reduced on the WAX2E from 2×630 on the WAX4 to 4×630. These updates have allowed Netgear to price the WAX630E very competitively at $350—a reasonable $20 premium over the WAX330's $630. The reduced number of radios also allows the WAX630E to reduce the maximum power consumption compared to the WAX630 (27.6 W vs. 30.1 W).
