I knew I wanted to do something different this summer to entice the kids to keep up with schoolwork and housework. Allowance doesn't work well with my kids, so their rewards needed to include things other money. I also wanted to make sure that they had an incentive to keep working throughout the summer, rather than giving up on it after a week. I bought a set of cheap cloth bags, a package of stick on letters and some Popsicle sticks and made a plan based on a point system. Different chores and homework are worth different points. Make the bed is 1 point; eat dinner with mom and dad (still a huge struggle in my house ) is worth 10. When the kids complete a task, they get to place a stick in their bag. At the end of the day, we count up their points and add them to a running total. We've got treats, cash and paid tablet apps up for grabs if they get enough points, so they can choose what to "spend" their points on. (So I can't spell Popsicle without autocorrect. Don't judge.) To keep them interested, we have some outings planned for when they (both) hit certain point thresholds. This is their second week, and we've already taken them to the movies. They are starting to lose interest in the chores, but that's their choice. I've made the schoolwork non negotiable Mon-Fri though, so they are earning at least 75 points a week doing that. If they stay interested, I may just have to actually make some fancy decorations and signs for the board instead of the crap I had on hand. Wish us luck!
