I just took my daughter in for labs. The lady at the counter said, "I need your ID (ok), your insurance card (ok), and a debit or credit card (?!!!!!). I asked her how much the charge would be. I'm not used to being asked for payment without having a price quoted.
She said, "We'll send everything to your insurance company and then only charge your card if they don't cover it 100%."
I don't know what my face looked like, but she assumed I was too stupid to understand (I get that a lot...) and patiently explained, "We just capture your information and only charge for your responsibility." Oh, I understand, but what I heard you say Crazy Lady is this:
"I'm just going to swipe your card, and we'll just charge you whatever the fuck we want without you having any prior knowledge. I might even tack on a few extra bucks, because I'm having a hard time, and it's not likely you'll notice. You don't mind right? You can trust me."
I told her to bill me. Fuck all that noise. I wouldn't hand a stranger a blank check. Letting some random office worker swipe my card without knowing the charge is just as good as doing that.
She said that they would bill me this time, but that they're doing away with billing soon. How do they figure they'll get away with that?

Every lab I've had done in the last three years has done that. I argue it every time. And get told to take my business elsewhere if I don't like it :/ lots of labs do it. It.sucks.

I guess I've just lucked out and this is the first time. That doesn't even seem reasonable to me. I understand that they've got to be saving tons of money in billing - and defaulted bills. I wouldn't begrudge them what they're due, but I'm not comfortable with blind charges. It's the same reason I won't let utilities autodraft my monthly bills. I want to see an invoice. Every damn time. I don't know if they're fairly charging me otherwise. I also can't budget correctly around mystery charges. May just be because I see too much of the downside of blindly trusting companies to charge their fees correctly in my professional life. It's just not a good idea.

Agreed. People LAUGH at us for refusing to do autopay on any bill. But we also never overdraft like some because say. ....insurance auto renewed automatically like just happened to my cousin lol

Um, no. Even if they only charge what you legitimatly owe, how much will that be?
So, how do I consent to a payment if I don't know how much it is? What if I say, "Oh, I'm sorry, I was a victim of identity theft and my lawyer has specifically instructed me to pay cash for everything while the lawsuit is pending."
This is the kinda bullshit I could waste hours of my life on googling until I figure out the legal reasons they cannot do this. And then I think to myself, "Wow, I love these Beeps, but I just wasted 3 days trying to win a battle I'm not even in."
I wish you could get a job finding items and services that people think don't exist. I can't tell you how many times someone says, "Does "xyz" person/service/business even exist? I wouldn't even know where to start", and I think, "Google". Give me $100 bucks and 3 hours and I could find you 3 options, sorted by 3 criteria each."

The last Lady who did my glucose testing and I had words about this. All of my maternity is covered by insurance. All. No copays. No need to meet deductible. Nothing on our end. (They don't start being assholes until the child actually gets here....where they then basically make you sell your first born back) They had no need for my credit card. The insurance verification was sent over before I was. They had all the proof they needed they would be paid in full. Still refused to draw blood until they had it on file. I was pissed. Told the Lady if I saw so much as a hold on my card I was coming back with the police and pressing theft charges. It's RIDICULOUS.

That doesn't sound right at all. I've always been billed for whatever insurance doesn't cover. In fact, I currently owe Ryan's dentist $5 because that's what is owed from his last visit. IF something like that were to come up they'd get my credit card, not my debit card, though.
Our health care in this country is jacked up, it shouldn't be this difficult, or expensive.
