This is mostly for chelsea, but everyone might benefit from this. I"ve discovered a method, that at least for my children, works to get their rooms cleaned. We only do room cleaning once a week, so they're really bad when they get to it, we've always had epic fights like hangers has described so many times. For the last month or so I've tried a new tact. I provide several steps; so step one will be laundry, step 2 is stuffies, step 3 is lego, step 4 is garbage and recycling step 6 is craft supplies etc. The rule is after step 2 is completed you may watch tv while you work, if I ever walk past your room (and I do that a lot) and you aren't working then the tv gets turned off, it can be turned back on when the next step is finished and we will start over. This carrot and stick approach has really cut down on fights. They don't get as mad about the consequence of losing tv if they know they can earn it back quickly, but they don't dare stop working cause I'll take their show away mid-episode.

We are doing better with what I'm calling "daily maintenance."
They are required.... before they do anything in the afternoons, to put their school things where they go. Before they sit down to breakfast beds get made, school clothes are put on, and dirty jammies are in the hamper in the garage. They are responsible for getting their breakfast unless I'm cooking still. They eat. Brush teeth. I do hair. We roll. When homework is done we police the room and make sure nothing needs to be put up. Then they get TV or outside to play depending on the weather.
Taking their clothing choices other than underwear and jammies out of their hands has created a little more work for me but far less mess and arguments among them. No more " that's MY shirt!" ... and said shirt gets thrown on the floor after a ten minutes of them screaming.
So far we are doing better after two weeks. Lana vacuums the room twice a week. (Wed and sat typically) since she's the only one tall enough to do so Lol
If we ever get to the point their room is that nasty again I'm just setting a match to the mother fucker. I can't deal with it.
