Like... the scrutiny to adopt that dog should be applied to foster care. Lol seriously. My thoughts on that is children do better in foster care than they do in a group home/orphanage, and it's cheaper for the states to have them go to foster homes. I agree there needs to be more scrutiny based on the horrible cases of foster abuse we see but I would like to think that more kids benefit from foster care than don't. But again, these are two different situations. We shouldn't chastise people who advocate for animals because our system is jacked up when it comes to children who need loving homes.

Ah Abby, excellent points as well and I can see where and why you stand where you do! Celebrities are a special kind of stupid IMO, and I think a lot of the time they give their face to programs just to stay relevant. But I'd also like to think that just because we see their face attached to PETA (weirdos) or the ASPCA that doesn't mean they aren't being charitable to human causes at the same time.
I think at the end of the day, when it comes to being 'charitable', a lot of these organizations need not only money but human bodies willing to volunteer their own time and energy. I mean, we can look at habitat for humanity--if 90% of the supporters only gave monetary donations that leaves only a few people willing to actually put in the 'work' it takes to build homes for needy people. For whatever reason giving up our time is far more difficult than stroking a check and putting it in the mail. It just is what it is.

I am not chastising them for advocating for animals. I applaud them for that. It's the self righteous, derogatory, judgemental nature in which they go about it that just supremely pisses me off.
Like I said. I see it lot. Because I moderate a page full of these folks and holding my tongue feels like acid. I was thrilled when the page owner FINALLY STEPPED IN Thursday and said "ya could chill folks. The owner just found themselves homeless and the salvation army doesn't take dogs."
Prayers ascended for that animal. Food fell from the sky. Offers of donations for vetting appeared from thin air.
The family that just found themselves homeless? Fuck them. But let's find the dog a new forever family that can take care of it.
America? You're doing it wrong.

Yeah, people are assholes, especially when they don't have all the info, or they just don't care. Some folks definitely wear blinders when they're over passionate about things. I still think this attitude isn't the norm, but I could be wrong!

The time vs money thing? Every time we get a phone solicitation, I explain that we don't have anything to contribute, but would love to hear about any volunteer opportunities they have. Some thank me for my time and hang up. Some tell me they'll forward my interest to someone who knows, and hang up. Some of them get bellegerent because they think I'm mocking them, and hang up. The rest just hang up.
It's unfortunate. Maybe the people on the phone haven't been trained to handle that question. Which is sad, because I think it would be a great follow up question when people decline to donate money.
You do make good points, Kissy. I think I'm just not open-minded enough. To me, it's not even a question of pets and people charities not being mutually exclusive. It's a priority issue. If you're giving $1,000,000 to each of those charities, I'm still going to think you should have given $2,000,000 to only one of them. I try to be reasonable in most situations, and I'm pretty successful. Just not this one. But considering your thoughts, I can say that I've at least gone from 'complete righteous indignation' to 'I see your point, but I still think you're wrong'. Baby steps.

But considering your thoughts, I can say that I've at least gone from 'complete righteous indignation' to 'I see your point, but I still think you're wrong'. Baby steps. I very rarely donate cash anymore simply because I just can't be sure it's going to the right place. I'm more than happy to donate things--clothing, food, shoes, blankets, etc., but I keep my cash unless I know exactly where it's going. That being said, volunteering at a rescue mission (human), soup kitchen, orphanage, homeless shelter, etc. doesn't require waiting for a phone call where people are asking for monetary donations. I would think that if you're getting phone calls asking for monetary donations and they aren't interested in telling you where you can go to actually donate your time then they're probably shady. I think you are open minded Abby, you're listening to me right now, lol! Being open minded doesn't mean you're going to agree with me or switch sides it just means you're willing to listen to another point of view--at least that's how I feel about it. In this country we should NOT have homeless/hungry people, it makes no sense. There are so many opportunities here. Throwing an extra million at human issues isn't going to solve them, and who knows where that money is really being spent. Fostering/adopting a child would do more good, IMO. But that's really a big deal, right? It's not something to take lightly, right? Fostering a family in need would be money/time well spent, so long as those folks decide to get up on their own two feet at some point, right? I mean, I've had people look at me and my financial situation and make comments about how we spend our money. Seriously. Don't get me wrong, I feel where they're coming from, but at what point do we as a society decide who should give what and how much? I don't know the answers, I wish I did. I can't imagine being homeless or hungry. I don't like to think about abandoned children or those in foster care. I can't. It hurts far too much. But it also hurts me to think that someone can give up a family pet simply because it's an inconvenience. Not in the same way mind you, but it still hurts my heart. I love you Abby!

Sigh. Every point is valid. The problem is that I'm looking at this emotionally, rather than rationally. And I know it.
Something happened around the time I turned 40. I stopped trying to win every argument, and started to listen. To actually learn. If I really care about a topic, I have to understand the opposition. Whether it sways me or adds fuel to my fire, critical thinking is good. You can't offer an informed opinion if you're not actually informed, kwim?
And again, mad love for everyone on this board. But Kissy - special place in the do-me chair for you. Now that you're gonna be single....

And think about this--I'm looking at it emotionally as well, just from the pet point of view. And the main reason that is is because seeing the human point of view is just far too painful for me. Does that make sense? It IS the inherent difference in that I can deal with the animal stuff much more so than I can with the human stuff. We definitely have to at least hear the opposition, it will either reinforce our beliefs are cause us to ask more questions, both of which are GREAT things!
